A Smart phone is a special kind of the cell phone which has a higher level of the analytical ability and connectivity than the ordinary mobile phones. Smart phones can be better defined as a computer incorporated in the mobile phone. Augmentation in the demand for much more advanced mobile phones having a much greater memory, Powerful processors, open operating system and large screens led in to development of the Smart phones. According to a survey conducted in United States by ComScore, Smart phone is fastest growing segment of mobile phone market which includes about 234 million subscribers in U.S.

The first Smart phone was developed by IBM in 1992, called Simon. It was released in 1993, to the public and Bellsouth Company sold it. With the features of the mobile phone, it also included a world clock, calculator, calendar, notepad, send and receive fax and games. Physical buttons was replaced by touch screen in this smart phone.

Nokia Corporation of Finland entered in the market of smart phone with the introduction of its Nokia communicator series started with Nokia 9000 that was released in market in year 1996.This was a palmtop style mobile phone and was result of extensive research carried out by Nokia. The Nokia 9210 was the first true Smart phone which have color screen with open operating system. First camera phone was also introduced by Nokia that was named as Nokia 9500.It was also Nokia’s first Wi-Fi phone.E-90 communicator model of Nokia included the GPS. The Nokia Communicator models are known for being most expansive model sold by any major brand which was about 20% to 40% more expansive than subsequent most expansive smart phone developed by any manufacturer. Nokia N-95 released in 1997 included a wide range of features like 5 MP Camera with LED flash and auto focus, GPS, 3G, WI-FI connectivity and TV output.Nokia corporation most resent release is the symbian based N-8 smart phone.

Sony Erricson released touch screen based smart phone R380 that was the first devise to support new symbian based operating system. Next was P800 released in 2002, the first symbian based camera smart phone.
